The History of Biofilm Alliance

  • Discovery Phase
UK Regulatory Science and Innovation Networks – Discovery phase
The Discovery Phase project of the Biofilm Alliance was undertaken to address the significant global challenges posed by microbial biofilms, which impact health, food safety, industrial processes, and the economy. The project aims to bridge the gap between scientific advancements, product development, and regulatory decision-making, ultimately fostering innovation and effective biofilm control across various sectors.
  • Implementation Phase
UK Regulatory Science and Innovation Networks – Implementation Phase
The Implementation Stage of the Biofilm Alliance focuses on translating the insights gained during the Discovery Phase into actionable strategies and tools. This stage involves developing a comprehensive catalogue of regulatory tools, conducting data collection and gap analysis through surveys, interviews, and workshops, and creating an expertise register to connect stakeholders with leading biofilm experts. The Alliance will also provide training modules and educational resources to support innovation and compliance, working closely with UK regulators to address challenges and improve biofilm-related standards
  • Biofilms in the food sector workshop
Biofilms in the Food sector Workshop, Nottingham, UK.
The Workshop brought together food industry professionals, microbiologists, academics and regulatory experts to address the challenges posed by microbial biofilms in food production, processing, storage, and packaging. The workshop focused on examining regulatory hurdles, discussing current needs, and exploring innovative solutions for effective biofilm control.
